Bharat Ratna : Highest Civilian Honour in India


Bharat Ratna:


Bharat Ratna is Highest civilian honour given for exceptional service towards:-
Advancement of ART, LITERATURE, & SCIENCE and In recognition of Public Service of the highest order.
The provision of Bharat Ratna was introduced in 1954.
There is no written provision that Bharat Ratna should be awarded to Indian Citizen only.
The Award has been already awarded to two Non Indians – Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan (Seemant Gandhi) in 1987 and Nelson Mandela in 1990. & a naturalized Indian Citizen – Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu (Mother Teresa) in 1980.
It is not mandatory that Bharat Ratna be awarded every year.

1st Bharat Ratna given to C.Rajgopalachari + Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan + C.V.Raman [1954]
1st Posthomus Bharat Ratna was given to LBS (Lal Bahadur Shashtri)
1st Serving PM who got Bharat Ratna was JLN (Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru)
1st Woman who got Bharat Ratna was Indira Gandhi.
1st Non Citizen – Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan (Seemant Gandhi)
Oldest who receive Bharat Ratna was Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve at the age of 100 yr.
Youngest who receive Bharat Ratna was Sachin Tendulkar at the age of 40 yr.
1980- Mother Teresa
1990- Nelson Mandella  and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar
1992- Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (Earlier he deny to receive this award as he is member of selection committee) + JRD Tata + Satyajit Ray
1997- Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
1999- Amartya Sen + Gopinath Bardoli + Pt. Ravi Shankar
